Flossing properly has been a debate that has raged on for as long as flossing has existed. Everybody seems to have their own preferences as to what techniques work best, and even which type of filament works best as well. Although we leave it to each individual user to decide what their preferences are, there are a few tips that most dentists can agree on when it comes to flossing:

— Try to include flossing in your daily oral health care habits by flossing at least once per day.

— The amount of thread you need per use is approximately 18 inches in length. Wrap each end around a finger and slide up and down the floss as necessary, always using a different portion of the floss to clean each tooth.

— Make sure to floss in between every single tooth and behind the back teeth.

—  To floss effectively, move your floss gently between each tooth in an up-and-down motion without pressing too hard on the gum line. You don’t want to irritate sensitive gum tissue.

— Always use dental floss or a dental tool that is ADA-approved or approved by your dentist at Hansen Dental Care. ADA-approved products have met rigorous testing standards and have been proven to be both safe and effective.

If you are having a difficult time finding or using the right floss and flossing tactics, or for a thorough cleaning to ensure your teeth are well protected from gum disease or tooth decay, we invite you to schedule a visit with Dr. Robert E. Hansen Jr., DDS at our office in Pasadena, California. Please call 626-793-2273 to speak with a friendly member of our team. We look forward to making your smile as great as it can be!
