Halloween is coming. That means lots of discounted candy, parties, and trick or treating for the kids. One thing you don’t want in your family is a cavity. Here are some things you can do to prepare:

Brushing Two by Two: We all know that it’s important to brush your teeth, but do you brush twice a day for two minutes each? It’s easy to remember and great for your dental health. Encourage your kids to brush as well. The best thing to do is lead by example. You can even turn tooth brushing time into party time!

Flossing Well: The ADA suggests that you floss once a day, for 2-3 minutes each. Use an 18-inch piece of floss and a new piece of thread for each tooth. Move completely around each tooth—especially the back molars! Great Food: Strong teeth aren’t just about how you clean your mouth. What you put in your mouth is just as if not more important. Choose delicious foods that are rich in calcium, such as cheese and yogurt. Look for foods with fluoride and phosphorus as well. If you can’t have dairy, include other calcium-rich foods such as beans and dark leafy greens in your daily diet. And when the candy comes, you don’t have to necessarily say no or tell your kids no, but simply limit your portion sizes. Consider avoiding sour sweets, as these can be especially damaging.
