Things to Consider when Shopping for Toothpaste

The ADA recommends that you brush and floss your teeth twice a day as part of an effective oral hygiene routine. Adding toothpaste to your toothbrush is a common way to improve the brush’s ability to clean away plaque and residual food particles from the faces and contours of your teeth. However, not all toothpastes are formulated the same and some have different additives to address specific needs. Here at Hansen Dental Care we offer a few basic things to consider when shopping for toothpaste.

First of all, you should only consider brands that have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal means that the toothpaste has been researched and tested by the ADA for safety and effectiveness.

Abrasive toothpaste is very popular, because it helps to remove plaque and residual food particles from the faces of your teeth. A brand with added fluoride also helps to strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay.

Nonabrasive toothpastes and denture polish are called for to clean dentures, or a partial. Nonabrasive toothpaste can also be helpful if you need to maintain a custom mouth guard, night guard or snore guard. Some nonabrasive toothpastes that are formulated to help mitigate symptoms associated with chronic dry mouth.

Whitening toothpastes are formulated with a mild concentration of hydrogen peroxide. These toothpastes help reduce minor surface stains between dental cleanings. However, they will not be strong enough to remove moderate and deep stains on teeth.
